A correctly fitted bra supports the breasts from the band rather than from the shoulders. That principle matters for breast health and long-term comfort, and it explains why a newly fitted bra can feel quite different from what you have been used to.
During a fitting, the benefits of that support are usually clear. Once you get the bra home, though, the first few days can take some adjustment. Think of a new pair of walking shoes: the fit is right, but the material needs time to settle and adapt to you. A firm feeling at first is not a sign that the bra is wrong. In the longer term, it should feel more comfortable and supportive than an older, looser bra.
What to expect in the first few days
The band is likely to feel tighter than you are used to. This is intentional. Elastic is designed to grip the body so that the bra can support you from the band. With the wire held in the correct position and the breasts lifted, there is less strain on the shoulders and the ligaments. That is better for your shoulders, back and breasts.
If the firmness feels like a lot at first, you can take the bra off after a few hours and put it on again the next day. After two or three days, it should feel comfortable enough to wear all day.
Hand washing the bra during this settling-in period can help it loosen slightly. Be careful not to let it stretch too much, as an overstretched bra becomes too big, unsupportive and uncomfortable.
Skin marks are not automatically a problem
People are not plastic mannequins. Stretch fabrics, socks, jeans and bras all press into the skin in order to do their job. Marks on the skin are therefore normal. They do not mean the bra is the wrong size or causing harm; the pressure is part of how the bra supports breast tissue. Sports bras in particular can leave marks.
There is a difference between ordinary marking and soreness. If a bra makes you sore, it is not suitable. Leave it off until your skin has recovered, and have the fit checked if soreness persists.
One adjustment worth making
Pull the back of the bra down so that it sits horizontally with the base of your breasts at the front. It will sit much lower than you may be used to, and you will feel the support from the band for a while.
